Under Pressure at Metro Kino Kiel – October 29

On Thursday, October 29, 2026, at 7:30 pm, Metro Kino im Schloßhof in Kiel shows “Under Pressure – A deep rift through the USA” once only – a few days before the US midterm elections, in cooperation with the Amerika-Gesellschaft Schleswig-Holstein, in the American original version with German subtitles.

Only two and a half hours by car separate Washington, D.C., from Piedmont, West Virginia – and yet the two places are worlds apart. The film follows for a year how Trump’s second presidency arrives in two opposing realities.

Afterwards director Tim Boehme, Dr. Frank A. Stengel (Kiel University), Dr. Oke Horstmann (Kiel University), John Rapaglia (John’s Burger) and Lindsey Merritt (Amerika-Gesellschaft Schleswig-Holstein) discuss with the audience the political mood in the USA and what is at stake in these elections.

Dr. Frank A. Stengel is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Kiel University and Non-Resident Fellow at the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) in Berlin. He researches populism and its consequences for international politics as well as German foreign and security policy; he is co-editor of the volume “Populism and World Politics” and has published, among other things, on Bernie Sanders and left-wing populism in the USA. Dr. Oke Horstmann is a research associate at the Institute of Social Sciences at Kiel University and heads the demokratie:werk of the Kieler Forschungswerkstatt. John Rapaglia comes from New York and, as the owner of John’s Burger, has created a Kiel institution – he brings the view from both sides of the Atlantic. Lindsey Merritt is Program Director of the Amerika-Gesellschaft Schleswig-Holstein; after studying at Whitman College in Washington State, she came to Schleswig-Holstein as a Fulbright language assistant. Tim Boehme talks about the shoot and his encounters on both sides of the political rift.
